Your Birthday

Melissa Jordan Grey

Yesterday was your birthday.

I saw the calendar and reflexively panicked.
Forced to honor you for so many years
While that date meant nothing but grief.

But now I commemorate a new day.
I celebrate no longer celebrating,
Nor placating, anticipating, tolerating.

Yesterday was your birthday.
But today is my self-worth day.
