Interior Motives

Some people see a room; I see an opportunity.

In my professional career, I’ve had the privilege of serving as artistic and creative director for hundreds of digital projects, from interactive media to user interface design to web projects. Over time, I realized that physical design shares much in common with digital design: texture, color, and human interaction.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with talented commercial, residential, and landscape architects. The photos on this page are the result of our collaboration.

Garden Design

I designed the hardscape and layout for this garden, which won San Diego Home/GardenGarden of the Year in 2019. Christiana Holmquist did an amazing job of choosing the plants and I consider her my mentor in all things plants. I designed the hardscape to explore the idea of patina and aging, I wanted to create something that incorporated weathering and change over time. Just as plants change during their lifetimes, so will the materials I choose. Steel becomes rust; copper becomes verdigris and wood becomes hewn and weathered.

Office Design

When we needed a larger office for our company, NewBlue, I set out to create a space that would invite collaboration and reflect the company’s creative energy. Teaming up with architect Don Vanderpool, I designed and created the space from the ground up, making nearly everything by hand from the colorful ceiling tiles to the wood slat wall to the custom desks. I chronicled the adventure in a series of blog entries I call “Champagne Space on a Beer Budget”.

 Home Design

Living in California affords the opportunity to create indoor/outdoor spaces that are organic and understated. With greenery peaking in from every window, I consider the interior of my home to be an extension of the earth. With that in mind, I choose largely unpolished materials including limestone, bamboo, glass tile, and reclaimed wood to create rooms that are functional and reverent to nature.
